Dania Beach Legacy Program

Honor the Legacy Project

The Honor the Legacy Project was envisioned to create a downtown self-guided walking tour featuring artistic markers referencing the legacy and history of Dania Beach as shared by the community and visualized by the artist Gary Moore. The artistic markers are not intended to be historic landmarks that correlate with specific sites or properties. The aim is to create an experience for residents and tourists while paying homage to Dania Beach places, moments, culture, heritage, leaders, pioneers, and other elements that make up part of the rich legacy of Dania Beach. Once installed, the CRA will develop a virtual/digital method to promote the walking tour aspect. This may include audio that can be played from a smartphone to link with each marker location. Walking to each marker in sequential order would involve walking less than one mile.

The artistic markers will be made of aluminum and securely fastened to solar light poles. The markers will be  approximately 2 feet tall and 11 inches wide, curving to hug the solar light pole. Gary Moore has completed a  similar project in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as shown below using a cluster of smaller markers on each pole. The  Honor the Legacy project will feature a single large marker on each pole.

Proposed Marker Locations

All selected solar light poles are on City of Dania Beach right-of-way and will be permitted through the City of  Dania Beach. The markers will not be located on private property or require permitting via Florida Power and  Light, Broward County or Florida Department of Transportation. This allows for a smoother permitting process  than if private owners or other regulatory agencies are involved. The proposed artistic marker locations are  primarily based on one or more of the following factors but can be altered as desired:

  1. Existing solar light pole location;
  2. Location within walking distance of other locations;
  3. Location near historic, memorable or significant site (past or present) or attraction; and
  4. Artistic marker theme has some connection with the location
